The Germans took the obsolete Czech Panzer 38 and installed a fixed superstructure and the captured 76.2mm Soviet anti-tank gun on a slightly modified Panzer 38(t) Ausf. H chassis. They made over 340 of these tank destroyers. While it lacked the fully rotating turret of the original tank, and had a higher silhouette, the greater range and penetration of the 76.2mm gun more than made up the difference. Production began in April 1942 and these vehicles served until the end of the war. Vehicles were organized in platoons of four and three platoons with two HQ vehicles were a tank destroyer company.
